HDB flats in the 1st phase of Edgefield plains

1. The first batches and the earliest batches of HDB flats in Punggol were build at Edgefield Plainsand Edgedale Plains were built closest to the TPE highway side. Today, this entire stretch parallel to the TPE is fully built. And many new flats are now built closer to the "other side" which is Coney Island and the sea closest to Johore Bahru - Malaysia

2. The least commencement dates of most of these flats are in the year 2003.

3. During that time, majority of these flats were built around that development's Multi-storey car park (MSCP).

4. And in fact, nearly every openings in the home less the main door and some kitchen windows open inwards towards the MSCP.

4.1 This means that unlike many units along the common corridor which usually have the living room windows and a bedroom window openedtowards the common corridor; here the bomb shelter occupies the location where often a bedroom is. This is to achieve close to total privacy unless an occupant choose to partially open the main door.

5. Even this 4-bedroom layout plan has just one opening (the main entrance) door at the common corridor side. Otherwise, all the blue arrows shows the windows facing this MSCP court-yard.

6. The disadvantage of such a design is that especially for higher floor units; one often get to see a neighbour's flat frontage at a distance. And no external views of the surroundings. Perhaps, this is a good thing; especially if the site next to one's development is up for construction. And the construction noise and dust can often be up to 3 years or more.

7. The newer HDB plots / blocks in Punggol today, are closer and closer to the sea and the waterway. And many no longer adopt such a design as mentioned, above.

8. In the past, older estates are the opposite. The flats face outwards and often towards the road. And they seldom face inwards towards the open car-parks unless the blocks are sandwiched parallel to each other in a larger plot of land.

Attached, please find a sample illustration showing a typical flat along a common corridor.

In this example, it is a 5-bedroom flat.

Here, one can see that besides the main entrance door; there are two more openings at the common corridor side: the dining table and bedroom 4. Both with sliding windows.
