Placement of Red banner above main door. Of Hokkien origin

Dear All,
It is a common practise for some Chinese to place a red banner above their main door.
The banner (please see a sample in the attached upload) can often have auspicious wordings or simply a plan red banner with tassels at each end.
Red symbolises prosperity for the Chinese.
In Singapore, nowadays, roughly 1 or 2 out of 10 households hand either a red banner and/or two red lanterns on each side of the main door - for luck.
Often, depending on sunlight filtering into the house, some households may change it either yearly or (half-yearly) depending on it's condition.
But for sure, before each Lunar New Year, the old one removed and a new banner will surely adorn above the main door - to start a new and prosperous new year.

Placement of Auspicious Red banner at a "Wet-market" in Singapore....

This government housing board flat is literally dotted with RED at the frontage:-

 

2 x large lanterns
2 x small lanterns
1 large banner

 

RED signifies auspicious conotation for the Chinese.

 

However, some of the picture shows that many of the occupants of this entire row of flats burn joss sticks. This accounts for the "blacken ceiling" of the corridor.

 

The white patches is done by the contractors trying to cover darker spot areas. Frankly, they should re-paint the entire ceiling instead!

Hi .. can the red banner be also place on top of the back door ( front door have already ), reason I asked is because my back door is facing a big Carpark of a factory that is less than6 meters away . Tks

Frankly, hanging a red banner is not cast in stone.

But traditionally, this is a common Hokkien practise to hang a banner at the front door. Seldom if any hang it on a "back door". Or rather, never done so.

However, if you treat the "back door" as a front door.. then possible.

Hi Master Robert when can take down the red chye

Some hang it all year round. There is no fix date. The only time that it must be taken down is that it is badly faded or worn. But if still bright red and looks new, can leave it there and then

Hi Master Lee , apologies to keep asking you question. 

- is there any specific measurement for the red cloths to be hang on entrance main door before actual moving date?

- besides red cloth, any other things need to hang at main door?
