Is it okay for a house to be next to a temple? What if the house is beside a quiet temple, but you can only see the temple from the living room and kitchen at an angle?

1. In many busy areas of Singapore, homes and apartments are located next to temples or other places of worship.

2. Both new and older apartments are often close to temples, making it difficult to avoid seeing one from your home. Some recent examples include condo buildings on Guillemard Road, Compassvale Bow (Sengkang), Telok Kurau Road, Serangoon North, Boon Lay, and Balestier Road.

3. Here are some points to consider:

3.1. It is best to avoid buying a home that faces directly toward a temple, such as a ground-floor or second-story unit with a living room or balcony overlooking the temple.

3.2. Avoid hanging wind chimes that face the temple.

3.3. One client mentioned that a Tibetan temple near her condo on Guillemard Road has chants that can be heard in one of the bedrooms until 11 pm.

3.4. In the same condo, one unit faces a Christian cross directly, while the temple is next to the bedroom. Fortunately, the church’s main structure is closer to the main road and does not pose a problem to the unit.

3.5. Some architectural features, such as roof shapes or sharp edges, may create “poison arrows” in certain situations.

3.5.1. There are both “clean” and “unclean” temples. Over the years, I have encountered examples of both. For instance, I previously mentioned an “unclean” temple in Yishun where my luopan became erratic.

3.5.2. Some temples may house “entities,” and a few “unclean” ones could contain unsettling items, like small bottles with visible figures floating inside.

3.6. Even “clean” temples are generally considered places that absorb people’s worries or emotions.

4. On a positive note, many people live near temples without any issues.

Hi Master Cecil...

I come across this topic and am seeking advice whether I should stay in or sell out my house which is next to a Thai-temple to be.

For your info,I bought a single storey semi d [facing East] in my hometown for own stay. As we plan to move back and clean the house,we noted the next door house is rented out to become a temple. It's so heartbroken when we know the news for they are surely blocking our way out whenever there's main event held and most importantly the bad fengshui. Somemore ,my unit is the last end unit with a playground next to it. My concern is,if we decide to stay in,is it very inauspicious to my family? Or better sell it ?We really love the environment actually.

Appreciate your advices to this matter.Tqvm

Here are some things to think about:

1. In Singapore, there are only a few thousand class A bungalows and class B semi-detached homes.

2. A class A bungalow in Singapore is usually at least 30,000 square feet. A class C semi-detached home is usually about 6,000 square feet or more.

3. In Thailand, having a semi-detached home that is 6,000 square feet or bigger is already considered good.

Why is this important?

3.1. Today in Singapore, many semi-detached homes are smaller than 3,000 square feet. Developers try to make up for this by building up to four stories, including a basement, upper floors, and an attic.

4. Having a large piece of land is a big benefit, especially if your home is far from a temple.

5. Many temples are built on land with good Feng Shui, but some are put on less ideal land just to make money.

6. Since I have not seen your home or the area around it, I cannot give a complete opinion.

7. I believe your home is on land with good Feng Shui.

8. Some basic things to remember:

8.1. If you cannot compare your current home to another one, you will not know if the next one is better or worse.

8.2. Even if there is a temple nearby, if your current home has good Feng Shui, it is better to stay.

8.2.1. If the next home has Feng Shui that is as good or better than your current home, moving could be considered.

8.2.2. But if the next home has worse Feng Shui, you should think carefully before moving.

9. Usually, any effects from a new temple can be seen within six months after it is built. You should observe what happens during this time.

10. Without more information, it is difficult to give a complete assessment.

It depends

1. Some temples are seen as clean, while others are thought of as dirty or bad.

2. People may worry about homes facing northeast or southwest, because northeast is called the devil's gate and southwest is known as the back door.

3. Most temples across the road are not a problem, especially if they do not directly face your home.

Hi Cecil,

Need an advise when reading this topic.

I'm planning to buy a corner lot house but make me a concern when see a temple opposite beside side of the playground.  Is this consider direct impact to the house feng shui ?

The corner house got 2 gates entry.   The main one is facing North in front is empty play ground only.

But 2nd gate at west which facing play ground also but just next of the playground consist a big temple is otw building up

Although it is not directly  facing in front of it but is quite near also. About 50-60 feets away.   There is gates to separate out the small garden and temple in fact that is one thing at least people will not able park their car beside the house when event available.

There is a balcony facing west also toward the small garden but is not directly to the temple.  However it can see it also from left if we turn our head direction to the left at balcony.

Opposite the small garden at west there there is a shop lot can be seen  which about 80-100 meters roughly.   There is a shop selling coffin.   Will this bring something bad also ?

Appreaciete your comment about this house feng Shui in this situation

Thanks

Hello Master Cecil,

My husband & I are considering buying a resale condo unit next to a Chinese temple. It is separated by a tennis court. And only the 2nd bedroom window is looking at the side of the temple. As it is a rather large condo development (300+ units), the main entrance to the condo development is a distance down the road from the temple. Is this ok?

Appreciate your advice. Thanks

For example, this question has a specific location where one can visualise the scenario.

Yours is too abstract.. where often only the person posting it really knows what they are talking about….

Hello Cecil,

I’m considering to apply for a BTO at Telok Blangah, but looking at the site development, it is surrounded by Chinese temples. Want to know what you think about the location and proximity of the temples.

thank you!! spacer.png

The two temples, especially the one on Telok Blangah Road near the MRT station with the eight immortals, are not very close to this small development you are considering.

The other temple is also not directly beside the development, but it is a bit closer. People have different opinions, and some, especially more conservative buyers, may be cautious about this.

Some buyers may be concerned if a unit faces or overlooks a temple.

Overall, I think you can still consider this development.

Hello Master Cecil,

My siblings and I are considering living in three terrace houses beside each other, next to a temple.

See terrace plan with North directions:

 image.png.057fd673f179f490e8df8867d8a33853.png

Blue terrace houses are facing the side of a temple, separated by a small road.

Orange terrace houses facing the main road, but are side by side temple (separated by a small road). However, houses and land are smaller due to access road, at the same price as orange terrace.

Should we reconsider living in blue or orange terrace houses in the picture?

There is a beach few minutes North.

Extra fact: Siblings zodiac is rabbit, rooster & dragon

Appreciate you advice, Master Cecil!

Dear Master Lee,

May I ask if I should be concern with the temple (Tiong Ghee Temple 忠義廟) being across the block (seperated by a road) of A(Blk160) or B(Blk161). Both units in A and B are located high floor.

Appreciated for your valuable sharing.

1. People have different opinions about living near a temple, whether their home faces it or simply has a view of it.

2. Some feel that being within 1 to 2 km of a temple is a major concern.

3. Even if it does not bother you now, your feelings or situation could change in the future.

3.1. It might be difficult to sell your home later on.

3.2. Even if you are comfortable with it, others may not be, and it can be challenging to convince them, especially if a Feng Shui Master has different views.

3.3. Family and friends might also have concerns.

3.4. Some buyers might use this as a reason to offer a lower price.

Dear Cecil, I'm your past customer fpr 2 houses. Am currently looking for houses again. Is it possible to ask u if this unit which has living room facing a temple ok in terms of fengshui?

Hi Alan, Best not to do so. Given that even if it is okay, it may also affect your future resale value. Thus really not worth it

This is quite a subjective topic, as there can be many perspectives. Especially if someone plans to sell it in the future.

Locally, there are small apartment blocks next to a church, with some offering views of the church grounds. It seems to be more of a family-oriented church. In this case, some private apartments even have churches situated nearby or right beside them.

The smoke from these activities can enter homes and, over time, may be harmful to the lungs.
