In the past, some Chinese people prayed to the Jade Emperor. On the altar, they tied a tall sugar‑cane plant to each of the two front legs of the altar table, one on each side, for luck.

Similarly, this Katong Antique House follows another tradition by placing a sugar‑cane plant on each side of the main entrance door. Please see photo. This is also done for luck.
