Here’s another situation where common sense applies.

Good morning! I’m exploring another idea: Is it better to have the staircase in the living hall designed this way, or should it be L-shaped instead? Is a straight staircase considered inauspicious? Some people blame this on Feng Shui. Feng Shui often favors staircases with a turn, as it’s believed the “qi” can meander upwards. In reality, this is not the strongest reason. With a landing in the staircase, if someone slips and falls, there is at least a break to stop them. But with a straight staircase, if someone falls—especially the elderly—there’s no rest stop, which could make accidents more dangerous.

I noticed that the main door, via the private lift lobby, appears to face the master bedroom door, which is not ideal. If the bedroom door is always kept closed, is this still a concern? This is a practical issue— in some layouts, someone standing at the entry can see directly into the bedroom or even the bed itself, and what happens there is left to the imagination.

Additional Case Study:

Hi Cecil I just wanted to get some opinion on the kitchen arrangement. If you are ok to provide some advice.

OK.. I be more specific. Is it OK the stove is quite close to the main door? But cannot see fr main door..

If one meets a conservative FS Master, it is a no no.

But the underlined concern is based on common sense.

If unit is high floor, and touchwood if a fire break out at the most probable location at the kitchen stove, then may have to jump down from the balcony or bedroom windows

IT'S SIMPLY PURE COMMON SENSE

1. I previously wrote about this junction and even shared photos of it.

2. In the past, before Singapore developed its network of expressways, many vehicles from Katong, Telok Kurau, and Siglap used to pass through this once-busy stretch of Mountbatten Road.

image.thumb.png.7a7f63a8d0a92ed87b68b7fe04f73b06.png

2.1. By the way, the earlier colonial planners or civil engineers who designed this road really deserve criticism for their poor work. Who designs such awkward and angular roads? By now, most of them are probably long gone and buried somewhere in the UK.

3. In fact, there have been a few incidents or close calls where vehicles have crashed into house No. 11 Mountbatten Road.

3.1. Common sense suggests that having a straight road like Mountbatten Road, combined with right-hand drive vehicles, some drunk drivers, and nighttime conditions, would inevitably result in several instances of cars crashing into the compound of house Number 11.

image.png.17462822ed4f1e616a2b0e2658cd18ea.png

3.2. This is why I was curious about what lies beyond the original photo shown here.

image.thumb.png.6527b82a66e0e526e2bbd8d0de3e238f.png

4. For example, if the road is similar to the one described above—a long, straight stretch—I would be concerned about it.

5. Today, Mountbatten Road, formerly known as Olive Road, was renamed to honor the late Lord Mountbatten, a member of the Royal Family who was tragically killed by the IRA during a boat ride.

6. House 11 has now been converted into a kindergarten, and a highway-style barrier has been installed at this stretch or corner. This barrier should effectively contain or deflect any out-of-control vehicles, except perhaps for heavy trucks.

7. Honestly, this review is really just common sense and doesn’t even fall under Feng Shui.

8. It only becomes a case of bad Feng Shui if something actually happens. When it does, people often point to the house and say it has bad or unlucky Feng Shui, right?

P.S. Princess Grace Kelly, formerly a US actress, also met her end due to a sharp turn in Monaco. Speeding and losing control of the car was a recipe for disaster.

Another practical consideration

Hi Mr Cecil, my contractor told me under fengshui living room floor has to be slightly higher than kitchen, is this true?

Outdated common sense.

Common sense in the past because frequent washing of the kitchen flooring. Thus don't want washing water to flow into the DINING flooring. Not so much the living room.

Ask contractor to update themselves. Nowadays all new homes all same level.

Hopefully don't pull a fast one. Ask him.. does it mean that it will cost more for you?

Hi Cecil, need your advice on following lights whether any issues.
1. Living room
2. Kitchen (even number)
3. Can I install such pendant light? And which direction (3A or 3B)? Or is it better not to install pendant light. Note: there is be *AC* on the dining room wall.

1. Ok
2. Yes
3. Feng shui does not micro manage this. But if your dining table is as shown, then common sense says 3A

Why aren’t there any indicative numbers for bed-head directions?

It seems that only the direction of the writing table is indicated. Is that correct?

00EF6483-0C08-42D0-B536-59258F9AB7D9.thumb.png.2de150d0a394b53ce61c8ff9d7aa9f59.png

For example: Hi [hidden],

The reason why only the study table direction is indicated is based on common sense. Study tables are smaller and easier to position. For beds, placement in a bedroom is usually limited by the door, attached bathroom, and windows since beds are large. The bed-head direction is actually shown, but no specific numbers are provided.

580F34B1-0D60-4E9D-83F4-DED9CC893CE0.png

For example, if a favorable bed-head direction is shown, not many people would choose a plan where the bed-head is slanted as illustrated below.

image.png.12da8d25a61337983f0d15928b739a85.png

Would you place your bed as shown above? The idea is: Even if you don’t live here, you should offer responsible advice—not advice like this.

This is common sense, not Feng Shui. Can I check a quick layout update with you? Are there any Feng Shui concerns if we reshuffle some of the small utility rooms and toilets on level 1? Hi [Hidden], It's generally recommended—not for Feng Shui reasons—that a store room be placed beside the staircase instead of a laundry room.

A store room is simply used for storing normal household items. However, a laundry room usually has water pipes, drainage, and electrical appliances like a washing machine or dryer. In case of an electrical fire, having the laundry room next to the staircase could pose safety risks.

It may block the emergency exit or cause smoke to fill the stairs during a fire. So, this is more of a safety issue than a Feng Shui concern.

If you feel this risk is manageable, or it’s not a major concern for your household, then you may proceed with the layout change.

Hi Master Cecil, my house 3D design is out, I’m sending to you now, please help to take a look, any changes need to be done? Thanks
Everything looks good. except the stove is too close to the side of the fridge. maybe either shift slightly to the left or use a 30cm by 60cm stove and or add a piece of vertical plank between the fridge and the the kitchen top.  Don't want food debris also to drop thru the side of the fridge. As can make friends easily with roaches and ants who love this type of thing

Should I install round or square recessed ceiling lights in my home?

1957411612_flatroundceilinglight.jpg.a0e3acdc4ca669c8c7eda45a595f3e4c.jpg       OR  1642992622_flatsquareceilinglight.jpg.8332a232bba88b62e33f01aedf57b64c.jpg

Frankly, this decision has nothing to do with Feng Shui. It’s simply a matter of common sense.

Some claim that square lights are more efficient, but since both square and round lights use the same flat panel design, their luminous efficacy should be about the same. Personally, I always prefer round ceiling lights. Why? Most installers use a drill with a circular saw, which makes it much easier to cut a hole for round ceiling lights. The size is just right for a quick and secure installation.

311247741_circularsaw.png.0061fc38223105de0e5c216ed359ca87.png323796801_circularsaw1.png.33351aa468100881b9a89bacdd83cadf.png1806964202_circularsaw2.gif.760fe15bc38fdc9719536a1374263f92.gif

4. Contrast it with that for a square light.  You don't see a saw capable of sawing a square hole right?

4.1. To install a square light, a circular hole has to be drilled / sawed. Next, a workman (work-person) has to use a linear saw and start to prepare a squarish hole. And the quality of this square hole is at the mercy of this person. If this person is not skillful or had sawed a larger hole, this is what can happen as shown in the above photo.

311184417_squareholebadlycut.thumb.png.2847446f254d3a5813c1d82e74e4db87.png

This is why I personally prefer this one:

Should I install curtains or blinds? What are your thoughts? Hi everyone! Does anyone have any good or efficient methods for cleaning Venetian blinds?

Another concern is the strings on blinds. They not only collect dirt, but more importantly, they should never be placed too close to a bedhead. If you know what I mean…
