Death in extended family - when can buy house or start a business

Hi Cecil,

Interested in understanding - If someone from extended family passed away, do we have to wait for 49 or 100 days or even longer before we can do the following?
 

1. view houses
2. Buy house
3. Moving into new house
4. Start a new business - for example, open a shop

1. Generally, it is believed that the deceased is supposed to return home on the 7th day. So if someone sprinkles, for example, talcum powder on the floor, they might get to see footprints on the floor.

2. This applies to anyone who had lived in that specific house and passed away recently. It can be a family member or, as you mentioned, an extended family member who had lived in that home. So the key word is “LIVED THERE”. It doesn’t even have to be your own family or extended family member.

3. In this situation, it comes down to the idea of having “moved away”. Therefore, out of all your four points, Paragraph 3 is the relevant one, which is about “moving into (a new) house” during this period.

4. This is the reason why some people are afraid to move house, in case the deceased “comes back” and cannot recognise familiar faces, that’s all. Because of this, some people feel unsettled and avoid moving for a while. And some feel uneasy about moving out within 49 days.

5. For some, the 100-day period has more to do with the completion of the mourning process.
