myfs_94021
Dear Sir,My working desk in the office is in my disaster direction. I seem to be having a lot of problems with the people in my office. Recently, I think there was an opportunity for me to prove my ability but someone above me is blocking it. At the same time, my company is undergoing a major restructuring and I am very fearful that I would be retrenched. I am really at a lost and I feel very helpless. I am not sure if my problems have anything to do with the position of my work desk. Can you please advise me? What can I do to improve my career and relationship with my colleagues? Staff Cecil Lee Posted July 28, 2003 Staff Share Posted July 28, 2003 Dear Geok Tin,1. An office environment is different from a home.2. Unless; one is the CEO or senior positions or do not have a personal room; frankly, there is very little one can do to or next to impossible to change the working desk direction.3. Nowadays, many office use system furniture and it is next to impossible to tilt or change it's direction.4. Honestly, you would have to depend more on "Human Luck". Nowadays, I do understand that many of us have `low morale' and tend to worry about things like restructing or retrenchments.5. However, look at it this way: the more we worry, the more, we get into a vicious cycle of such thoughts.6. In my opinion, "nervousness" and "tensions" will often lead to negative thoughts; and often lower our health resistance. 7. What any boss/superior needs today are `reliable' people. Look at it this way: Many supervisors themselves equally feel insecure themselves.8. Unfortunately, in fact, this is the first time; that many Directors/Senior Managers and Human Resource managers have dealt with such issues of retrenchments.9. In fact, in my opinion, we have to:1. try to make ourselves relevant e.g. "knowledge is power".2. "Love thy work"3. Continue to develop a healthy home environment with spouse and children. "Our children - is our future".(Nowadays; in Singapore, I personally find that "Our daughter is our future.... our boys often have to chase after 6 Cs i.e. Car, Cash, Condo, Club, Credit Card and Career. Often, if they (the boys) found a Car, a Condo, a Club and have many Credit Cards, this is the `end' of their means to give to their parents;(Perhaps, why not listen to the (Singapore) government - more kids : to be sure: why not go for 3 daughters and 1 son? How about it?
