1. Some say that "Curiosity kills the cat". But getting involved in understanding thingsisafterall not a bad thing after all.
2.When I was young, I always had a habit of opening up all my toys. And removing all the various motors; the magnets and the drive shaft of these mechanisms.
3. Thus simingly; trival things like the design of grille gates to many is just something pretty common. But for me; I would often like to understand how functional it is.
4. A bit of imagination is good. As the way we place the grille gate; it's opening to the left or to the right has a "permanent" impact on those staying at that home. Sometimes; it is a pity that we see some of the gates open at the wrong side. Thus either intruding towards a neighbour's main door or it simply does not make commonsense to open towards a specific direction.
5. Please see attachments.
6. Looks like much effort has been considered to develop this three fold (leaf) grille gate. Why do you say so?
7. I have seen this design in the 1990's. And till today; many of the new government Housing board flats (HDB) flats continue to use this design!
8. The saying goes... if sometime is practical; and useful; why not continue to provide it?

The three leaf (fold) gates found on newer HDB flats completed in 2011. (Location: Ang Mo Kio Ave 1)
The major improvement of all 2011 onwards three leaf (fold) grille gates is that the entire bottom area is covered. This is to prevent either someone trying to peer into the gaps of the door and/or prevent animals such as cats or dogs to escape or run-into the home!

This is another design of the same concept: Three Leaf Grille Gates.
Photos were taken at the Clementi Hub (Blk 441) of flats.
It has a very simple rectangularish design. This design does not have the bottom covered.

What is the fengshui difference or impact of the 3 leaf design vs 2 leaf design for the 4x7 ft entrance? Many home owners renovated from the HDB 3 leaf to the 2 leaf gate.

2. This is because unlike say a Household shelter metal door(s); the grille gates are always well ventilated. And it's primary purpose is to act as a deterrent or protection or a delay of forced entry (if any).

There are past messages in this forum showing instead that older generation HDB flats especially those belonging to the 1964's to 1979's where the frame and the door opening dimensions are auspicious based on the Feng Shui ruler.

4. Therefore, don't be overly concerned with 2 leaf or 3 leaf gates.

5. Simply just look at oneself and whole family in the mirror first. If one is of a larger size; then the wider the width of the main grille gate the better. That's all.

Case Study: Pure common sense and 2 leafs or 3 leafs grille gate?

In the past, when HDB doors were not that wheel chair friendly, the early generations grille gates had 2 leafs.

As time progress, HDB entrances got larger. As such, recent years HDB adopted three leafs. With the middle leaf the largest. Both to accomodate wheel chairs as well as knowing that some  residents are of a larger size or often go shopping marketing and allow easier access.

Thus don't you think that this has more to do with pure common sense? And literally nothing to do with Feng Shui.

However, I know of especially many HDB Executive flats adopt two leafs. Where one leaf is the largest and the other smaller leaf. Again there is no wrong. As with a proper ratio of the larger leaf, sometimes it's opening may even be larger than a three leaf version. (Frankly, I have not measured such widths. Given that it has no Feng Shui value).

In fact, many ECs and Condos often use two leafs as often their main door entrance is as large as 1 metric size, today.

Other minor considerations:

Not sure, maybe the costs of two leafs is cheaper than a three leaf grille?
