In my opinion, one of the lowest common denominator in for compatibility is the DAY a child is born. Thus if the child is both in the year of the snake but in general born on a dragon day; this can differ from a chlid born in both the snake year and snake DAY.
In addition; hour of birth may mean a good or a poor Heaven luck (ba zi chart).
How is it certain that although you are a Year rat and hubby year pig; each of the day that you were born does matter. A person born in the year of rat may even be a snake element depending on day of birth.
In ba zi, we also look at one 's element and strenght e.g. Strong water? Etc

Just recently, I mentioned that Chinese Astrology or Horoscope based on the 12 animal signs is a simplistic model based purely on one's YEAR of birth. Reference: www.lovesigns.net
Chinese Astrology is akin to going for a chest X-ray or if one is suspect of having broken bones, may go for such an X-ray. As bones are hard and a simple X-ray can reveal broken bones if any.
But for delicate tissues or organs and going into each minute slice; one nowadays may have to go for an MRI scan.
Thus Ba Zi is akin to an MRI scan technology. But Chinese Astrology: Oh! I was born in the Year of the rat is rudimentary technology.
Under Ba Zi, what is more important is the day a child is born in which ever year e.g. Year of the Pig, Year of the Rat, Year of the Ox etc....
Under Ba Zi, there can be many Toms, Dicks and Susan born in the Year of the Rat. But there are even fewer in that year born on a specific day and even a specific hour!
Under Ba Zi, today may belong to e.g. the water pig, tomorrow, the water rat, the other days a metal snake etc....
And compability based on Ba Zi is on each person's ba zi element and strength vs another person's ba zi element etc...

Further to what I had mentioned.
Some of us are either na?ve or fool-hardy or know the none wiser.
Some of us want our child to be compatible. But wait! Sometimes there may be a price to be paid, here!
Sometimes, a compatible child's ba zi may suck! What is better if his ba zi is good or lucky vs a ba zi that is inauspicious or nothing to cry about.
Don't we as a parent what our child to have as much advantage as possible.
Some children are born with very auspicious luck periods, some so so etc...

You can find an individual's element and strength under this url:
http://www.geomancy.net/reports/free-report/freerpt-element.htm

Note: The final result is always either Weak or Strong e.g. weak water, strong water, weak wood, strong wood etc....
