Reunion Dinner on Monday, 16th February 2026

image.thumb.png.6978eedbc00241a7596cd62b775d02f2.png

Chinese New Year’s Eve reunion dinner (年夜饭 / 團年飯) is one of the most important traditions in Chinese culture. Its importance comes from several layers of meaning:

1. Family unity and togetherness
   - It’s the most important family gathering of the year—similar in significance to Thanksgiving dinner in the US or Christmas dinner in many Western countries.
   - People travel long distances (the Spring Festival travel rush 春运) just to be home for this meal. Being present at the table shows belonging and commitment to the family.

2. Honoring ancestors and family roots
   - Many families offer incense, food, or prayers to ancestors before the meal.
   - This shows respect to previous generations and reinforces the idea that the family is a continuous line, not just the people currently alive.

3. Wishes for prosperity, health, and good fortune
   - The dishes are symbolic, chosen for their meanings:
     - Fish (鱼 yú) – sounds like surplus (余): wishing for abundance.
     - Dumplings (饺子) – resemble ancient ingots: symbolizing wealth.
     - Nian gao (年糕) – sounds like year higher: wishing for progress and promotion.
     - Longevity noodles – wishing for long life.
   - Eating these foods together is like a shared, ritual way of sending blessings into the new year.

4. Reinforcing family roles and bonds
   - Elders sit in honored seats and often give red envelopes (红包) with money to children and younger relatives.
   - This passes down not just money, but also blessings and expectations, showing care and responsibility across generations.

5. Closure of the old year and welcoming the new
   - The meal marks the transition point between the old year’s difficulties and the new year’s hopes.
   - People often avoid arguments and negative talk at the table, believing it may affect the luck of the coming year.

6. Cultural continuity and identity
   - For Chinese people in China and the diaspora, the reunion dinner is a strong link to cultural heritage.
   - Even if other traditions fade, families often still keep this one, because it’s simple, emotional, and deeply meaningful.

7. Emotional comfort and belonging
   - Beyond symbolism, it’s a moment of warmth: familiar dishes, family jokes, shared memories.
   - For many, it’s the one time a year when everyone slows down and truly reconnects.

Do you know why we only open for business on even lunar days during Chinese New Year?

We pick even lunar days like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, or 12th because even numbers are seen as lucky. They’re connected with balance and the idea of “double happiness,” which feels especially meaningful during the festive season. Even numbers are believed to bring harmony and good fortune.

Odd numbers, however, are considered less lucky. They’re more often linked to funeral traditions. Funerals usually take place on odd days like Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday. This follows the Yin and Yang belief, where odd days represent Yang—symbolizing energy and activity. Placing the deceased, who represent Yin, to rest on a Yang day is meant to create balance.

So, choosing business days during Chinese New Year is based on these cultural beliefs, helping to promote harmony and welcome prosperity through the symbolism of numbers.

How strictly is this tradition followed in modern Chinese business practices?

How closely businesses follow the tradition of working on even lunar days during Chinese New Year really depends on the company. Traditional and family-run businesses, especially those in places where customs are still strong, tend to stick to this rule quite closely. Important activities like reopening after the holidays or signing contracts are often planned for lucky days. Feng Shui and number meanings still play a big role in these decisions.

Larger companies and international firms are usually more flexible. Some may acknowledge the tradition in a symbolic way but don’t let it dictate their entire schedule, especially when they’re dealing with global clients or partners. For these businesses, practical needs sometimes take priority.

Even so, most companies are aware of and respect these lucky dates and customs. Many still talk to Feng Shui experts or consider cultural beliefs when choosing important business dates. In today’s world, there’s a blend of old traditions and modern needs, with companies keeping the customs where they can without slowing things down.

In summary, how strongly this tradition is followed depends on the type of business and its environment, but these cultural beliefs continue to shape Chinese business practices in various ways.

Singapore Apartment Property Outlook for 2026

SUMMARY5.thumb.png.1ea6e78be4b98d376b7311efa8b08483.png

Private Condo Market

The upcoming “Supply Crunch” in the private condo market points to a big drop in new launches for 2026, which is very different from the recent surge we’ve seen. With fewer developers competing, prices are more likely to stay steady, so buyers shouldn’t count on getting major discounts in the new launch market.

HDB Flats for Buyers and Sellers

In the public housing sector, more than 13,000 HDB units will be reaching their Minimum Occupation Period (MOP) this year. This wave of flats entering the market brings a mixed situation: buyers will enjoy a wider range of choices, while owners of newer flats may face stronger competition from neighbors who are also putting their homes up for sale. To secure the best possible selling price, these sellers will need to make their flats stand out.

Stable Competitive Interest Rates

Interest rates are settling down, with mortgage rates finding a “new normal.” This makes things less volatile than they were over the past two years, giving homeowners more confidence and clarity when planning their monthly repayments.

Make Smart & Well-Considered decisions in 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, the emphasis should move away from rushing into deals and toward making smart, well-considered decisions in property transactions. Sellers should review whether their homes have already reached their peak growth potential, while buyers should focus on spotting good-value opportunities between the HDB and private markets before these price gaps eventually narrow.

Best Wishes,

Do you know why we open for business during Chinese New Year only on even lunar days?

1. For example, we always start work or open for business on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, or 12th day of the lunar new year.

2. One reason is the idea of double happiness, which values a pair over just one. Odd numbers are seen as unbalanced, while even numbers represent harmony.

3. Another tradition is that Chinese burials and funerals, including cremations, are always held on odd days.

3.1. So, if someone passes away on a Monday,

3.2. the funeral is scheduled for the following Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday. It continues by following those odd days for any related ceremonies.

3.3. Odd days are associated with Yang, while the deceased represent Yin. It is believed that burying someone on a Yang day helps maintain the balance of Yin and Yang.

Li Chun (立春) is the “Beginning of Spring” in the traditional East Asian calendar. It’s one of the 24 solar terms used in Chinese (and related) calendars to track the seasons based on the Sun’s position, not the lunar months.

Key points:

- What it is: Li Chun
  - It marks the **start of spring** in the traditional agricultural calendar.
  - Astronomically, it’s when the Sun reaches **315° ecliptic longitude**, usually **February 3–5** each year.

- Cultural significance:
  - Traditionally seen as the time when **Yang energy begins to rise** and nature “wakes up” from winter.
  - Farmers used it to plan plowing, sowing, and other spring activities.
  - In folk customs, people may:
    - “**Bite spring**” (咬春) – eat spring rolls or fresh vegetables.
    - **Stand eggs** on their ends for luck.
    - In some places (especially among Chinese communities in Singapore/Malaysia), people do **Li Chun bank deposits** to symbolize “growing” wealth for the year.

- Li Chun and the zodiac year:
  - In **astrology/Four Pillars (Ba Zi)**, some practitioners treat **Li Chun as the real start of the new zodiac year**, not Lunar New Year.
  - The year’s **Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch** (e.g., Fire Horse, etc.) sometimes “start” from Li Chun in this system.

- For 2026:
  - In 2026, Li Chun falls on 4 February 2026** (in most East Asian time zones, including China).
  - That date is therefore considered the **start of the spring season** in the traditional solar calendar, and in some metaphysical systems, the **start of the 2026 zodiac year**.
