October 8, 201411 yr Staff Beautifully restored Petain Road Terrace HousesShophouses and their residential counterpart, the terrace house, have been a quintessential part of Singapore's urban landscape ever since their basic design was laid down in Sir Stamford Raffles' Town Plan of 1822. In essence, these buildings form a continuous row of units separated by common party walls and linked in front by a sheltered verandah popularly known as a five-foot way. The ground floor usually served as a business premise, while the upper storeys were occupied by the owner or rented out to other tenants. BookWalking ToursAt last count, there were 235 shophouses lining Jalan Besar proper, a tangible record of architectural tastes from the 1880s to the 1960s. The earliest surviving shophouses along the road (61-65 Jalan Besar), built in 1888, are simple two-storey structures with minimal decoration and a narrow frontage. Later developments, particularly shophouses built in the 1920s and 1930s, were highly ornamented and expressed the wealth gained from a Malayan tin and rubber boom. An unmatched example of architecture from this era is this row of 18 double-storey terrace houses. Built in 1930 for a landowner named Mohamed bin Haji Omar, the houses reflect a contemporary obsession with glazed ceramic tiles, which cover the ground-level façades and even the upper storey columns in lavish numbers. Designed by architect E.V. Miller, the terrace houses were built in a style often referred to as Chinese Baroque, which blended neoclassical features such as Greco-Roman columns with elaborate capitals bearing Chinese motifs. These houses also incorporated colours favoured by the Peranakans, although one unit which served as a Hockchew temple used to be distinguished by its red doors and windows. Complementing the floral ceramic tiles are colourful plaster reliefs of birds, trees and blossoms over terracotta finishes. Many of the tiles along the five-foot way were lost over time and had to be replaced by similar pieces made in Vietnam during their restoration. In the past, songbird enthusiasts would gather near the terrace houses to display their singing pets in cages. This area was once known as Keen Chio Kar ('foot of the banana tree') in Hokkien, as Chinese vegetable arms were located here before the houses were built.
