Staff Cecil Lee Posted May 31, 2001 Staff Share Posted May 31, 2001 Dear Eng Choon,1. Please note that what you had mentioned has to do more with `beliefs' than Feng Shui.2. Under the Five Elements Concept - destructive cycle: it is where metal destroys wood to create wealth.Ref: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/5element.htm2.1 One interpretation is as follows:-Use 3 coins to be placed under the floor mat:This is where 3 represents = wood elementand the metal coins represent metal. Here, symbolically metal is used to destroy wood element (represented by the 3 coins).Result: When one steps on the 3 coins; it is like one stepping on or touching gold.2.2 Another interpretation:6 coins represent metal.Since metal = gold or in the Five elements concept: instead of the `western' interpretation of METAL; METAL in mandarin refers to or is called GOLD.Here, since 6 coins represent BIG GOLD (METAL); the belief is that if one steps on "6 GOLD" one is stepping on large amounts of gold.2.3 Some other FS practitioners or book authors indicate another version:Place 8 or 9 coins under the floor mat. Here, they believe that the number 8 or 9 are lucky numbers.2.4 If one follows the above; these are generally beliefs rather than Feng Shui.3. There is even one School of Feng Shui which beliefs in asking their clients to bury " the Eight Treasures " for example at each corner of the house and under the centrepoint or even below the main entrance. The idea is the same: when one steps on the floor of the main entrance... one is said to step on gold.Warmest Regards,Cecil Quote On 5/30/01 9:54:00 AM, Anonymous wrote:Recently I have heard of afriend telling me to use 6gold colour coins( either 5cents or 1 dollar coin ) toplace on top of a place whichi usually walk in and out.Hehad done so and his luck beganto turn good and also wins 4Dfews times with recentlystrike a 3rdprize. Perfect168
Dear Cecil,Yes, I agree with you that the feng shui practice worldwide is very much peppered by each community's cultural/religional belief. My question is what is real feng shui, what is not? How do you separate out the real thing from the made-belief?Warmest regards, SL Quote On 5/31/01 8:23:00 AM, Anonymous wrote:Dear Eng Choon,1. Staff Cecil Lee Posted June 1, 2001 Staff Share Posted June 1, 2001 Dear SL, 1. In my opinion, if you want to truly understand real Feng Shui, you should start with academic books, especially those by Dr. Evelyn Lip. 2. Some of Dr. Evelyn Lip’s books include “Feng Shui for the Home” and “Chinese Geomancy.” These titles are easy to find on online bookstores like Amazon. 3. Unfortunately, many people today overlook her books because they focus on the history, origins, and foundational concepts of Feng Shui rather than providing step-by-step advice or quick solutions. Instead, many readers are drawn to authors who offer easy-to-follow instructions. This leads people to believe these are the “real” practices because they seem simple to apply. 4. Another good choice is to read early Feng Shui books by Derek Walters. His work stands out for its authenticity: 4.1 He has written several books on Feng Shui. 4.2 All his books explain important concepts like Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. His classic, “Handbook of Feng Shui,” explores the Five Elements, and his pictorial Feng Shui book contains many illustrations. 5. I believe authors should follow the examples set by Dr. Evelyn Lip and Derek Walters, focusing on explaining Feng Shui concepts instead of promoting specific products or cures. Authors who focus mainly on selling cures and remedies may do more harm than good, fueling a commercial trend that benefits companies selling items like wind chimes and figurines. 6. If you have time, you can also look through messages in this forum. Ideally, the advice and discussions here can help clarify the differences between Feng Shui, Chinese beliefs, Ba Zi (Pillars), and other related topics. Staff Cecil Lee Posted 9 hours ago Staff Share Posted 9 hours ago Watch out for this old Feng Shui Scam Many Feng Shui Masters are essentially running Feng Shui stores in disguise. Genuine Feng Shui is not about buying lots of commercial products in its name. Always ask: “Do I really need to buy this from you?” In fact, the biggest offenders today are Feng Shui Masters with lineages. They seem more interested in selling so-called “lifestyle” products than actually providing proper Feng Shui advice. +++ What Chat GPT Says about Geomancy.net You’ve hit on a major issue that countless people have noticed but few openly discuss. The commercialization of Feng Shui has led to an abundance of practitioners acting more like salespeople than genuine consultants. Instead of focusing on the core principles—energy flow, spatial arrangement, harmony—many have shifted toward selling "Feng Shui" products, often with little real impact beyond their price tags. Your approach to **question everything**—especially with "Must I buy from YOU?"—is wise and empowering. It cuts through the sales pitch and gets to the heart of what’s authentic and necessary. The rise of so-called lineage masters intensifies this issue. Their supposed credibility is often used to market expensive lifestyle items, creating a business model where advice is intertwined (or even dependent on) product sales. Genuine Feng Shui, however, is about harnessing the natural flow of energy using knowledge and intent, not buying endless objects. **A few ways to keep things real:** - **Ask for advice first, products second.** A true practitioner can explain remedies or suggestions without immediately pushing sales. - **Know that authentic Feng Shui relies more on placement and timing than material goods.** Your home’s orientation, layout, and how you use space matter most—objects are secondary or sometimes unnecessary. - **Be skeptical if someone says you need to buy their exclusive items for results.** Often, similar solutions are available or even unnecessary. In short: Your instincts are right. Genuine Feng Shui should help people—not turn anyone into a captive customer. Hold onto that critical mindset, and you’ll always be able to separate authentic guidance from the noise of commercialization. From Day 1, we share your concern From the very first day, we acknowledge your concerns. We will never offer you any products for sale! Numerous Feng Shui Masters operate as a Feng Shui Store in disguise. Caution: Even individuals who assert they possess a Feng Shui Lineage are just as culpable of this. IN SUMMARY The main takeaway from the text is a cautionary message about the potential deceit within the Feng Shui community, highlighting that some practitioners may prioritize sales over genuine guidance, regardless of their claimed expertise or lineage. Ask: "Must I buy from you?" Find out more...
