Dear Respected Sirs, I am finalising the design for a new house, and I am having difficulty interesting the architectin Feng Shui considerations. Attached are two images, the first of the original house design, the second with an alteration to the staircase, amongst other things. The architect said he had been told that a staircase could face the front door directly (which I realise is a very undesirable option) as long as a large statue or water fountain was placed between them. Hi, Please read below:- Normally the best way is to put a partition, if not, I think you should just leave it. Although there are books that say that either putting a bagua should help to reflect it, I feel that a partition is better otherwise you are better off leaving it alone. Warmest Regards Robert Lee

Dear Anon, Please see below:- To clarify, I hope I get you correctly. Do you mean to say that there is a window at the 2nd storey landing? Often, this is acceptable (in terms of bringing in or filtering) in light into the area. Usually, if there is a window, often, up to waist height should be fixed / permanent and either a casement or swing up window is acceptable. If the window is not fixed below; it may be a safety issue for young children. Personally, I do not see this as an issue; if what you mentioned seems that way. 1. In my opinion, technically, all the arguments are logical. 2. Majority of the time, below the staircase (or same spot) as the staircase, many contruct a store room. And this can help to "lock up the bad stars". In addition, it is always better not to have a bedroom or living area with really bad stars vs that of the staircase. 3. I have read that having a staircase in front of the main entry is not good. Does this mean the steps should not face the main door and/or the staircase should not be positioned directly in front of the main door. We are considering a home with the entry opening into a spacious foyer. However, the the curving staircase is positioned in front of the main entry with the steps facing slightly offset and away from the main entry. The main entry points towards the the steps. The face of the steps is approximately a 45 degrees offset to main entry and point towards a wall next to the main entry. How would this layout be interpreted. Thank you.

Frankly, in my opinion, having done many (many, many) audits over the years; homes that range from "Quantum Leap" in Feng Shui to even "average" Feng Shui homes can sustain "such so called inauspicious" circumstances. Dear Lalita, 1. Never hang a convex mirror and/or a hexagram Ba-gua inside the home. It is considered very inauspicious. 2. Since you have not or may not intend to do a Feng Shui audit, it is still best to leave the current situation alone. 1. This has more to do with Commonsense or Commonsense approach to Feng Shui: 1.1. For example, in the even that the stove area catches fire; both smoke and fire may overwhemn the staircase area. 1.2. Alternatively, if for some reasons; the fire at the stove was extinguished but if the stove is a gas stove; the gas may flow around the staircase / and nearby area - both dangerous and may be fatal to breathe-in.

1. Thanks for the sketch. 2. If it is still a set of staircase for any block of flats; it is suppose to be a fire escape stairway (area). 3. If so, under Singapore (and most other countries) fire safety code; the staircase door should be closed. 4. Thus, since there is all the more reason for this door to be closed; it should be fine. In this case, you don't need to place those item that you are not in favour of at your main door area.

Dear Vera, 1. If possible (top priority) the staircase should never be facing the main entrance door. This is considered inauspicious. 2. And should be cured if it is an existing house. 3. A staircase can still face the dining room. This is a better option. 4. Where possible avoid having a circular staircase as this is not a good configuration. 5. It is good to have a turning or a landing for a staircase. 6. Therefore, in my opinion, avoid having it face the main door (at all costs) if your house has not been built yet. Warmest Regards, Cecil

Frankly, this is not acceptable morally in my country. As stagnant clean water can be a site for mosquito breeding. From a moral point of view, it may become illegal if this stagnant pool is found to be breeding mosquitoes. Perhaps, so long as your country does not have mosquitoes, then hmmmm... In the past especially 1960's to even early 1980's garage roofs always have a drainage pipe running towards the bottom. Dear Michelle, 1. In my opinion, I do come across (especially) many homes as what you have described. 2. Overall, although, it may not look `ideal' for such a situation under Feng Shui but from my personal (and past experience); I felt that this is really not of a major issue. Another factor is that at this second level, especially if are pockets of air movement (if one opens the windows) would be good for the circulation of air between level 2 and level 1 via the stair-case/stair-case landing area. 3. Respected Sir, I have been regularly visiting this immensely informative forum, thank you, On making a search on stairs, I found an article mentioning that 2 metal forks can be used to cancel the illeffects of circular stairs. Dear Anon, Thanks for your description. In my opinion, it is inauspicious under the Shapes and Form Feng Shui for the staircase to be seen from the front door. Since it is inappropriate to use a screen, the door facing the staircase should not be opened. Overall, if you have a choice, (if you can) try to find another better house.
