I am really enjoying your site and use it frequently, even for friends. I need some information to clear up confusion. I use the east/west system and take my compass readings from the inside looking out. I have been drawing up different charts, as I think my real facing direction is actually east as that is where my big picture window and deck face, whereas in my condo complex my front door is actually 270 d west and enter into a small hallway above a staircase...should I try both templates? or do I use just the direction my front door faces, with me standing inside my condo looking out? Or do I stand in my sliding glass door in the back of my condo facing east that overlooks my most unencumbered view?

The other confusion is this: I have several books on Feng Shui, (Lillian Too, Larry Sang, etc. Ido not use any BTBFeng Shui)and there are conflicting views on where exactly to take compass readings. Some show that you should be outside, facing your front door for the reading. That would put the compass shot directly opposite. Also, the House Trigram formula...shows sitting direction and facing directions in direct conflict with compass east/west sitting and facing direction. How do I know if I have a Dui house as opposed to a Chen house? And is the compass east/west system just for my personal directions, or is it for my home too? Could you please explain the difference. I want to start applying Flying Star Feng Shui to my home, and I want to make sure I have the right formula to use mountain and water stars in different sectors.

Also am planning to remodel to period 8, and have a chance at a spiral staircase (for free) vsregular stairs, and need to know what template to apply to my remodel for maximum benefit (where to place the staircase). So it is critical I know the difference between the systems and where exactly are the proper sectors for my house.

Incidentally, my door is exactly 270 degrees (magnetic north) and back door exactly 90, overlooking a beautiful valley.

Firstly, you should attempt to determine which is your house facing direction.

1. For landed property (ie bungalow/semi-bungalow/terrace), it is best to take the facing direction of your home itself.

2. For Apartment (2nd-7th Level), take the main door direction. ie stand inside your house at the main door looking outwards.

3. For Apartment (8th level and up), take the balcony or living room. ie inside your home looking outside the balcony.

Since yours is a condo. Therefore, determine whether it falls under 2 or 3. Any thing above 7th level is considered to have unblock view from the balcony as such we always considered having clear space or virtual water.

Frankly, there are many types of facing and direction so I cansay that most method are essentially correct.

1. Taking the main door from the centerpoint to main door. This kind of assessment is practical for assessing the flying star for the interior of the house only. The good thing about this is the sector of the main door falls the same as the facing direction.

2. Taking the main door direction standing at the main door. This assesment is good for apartment, but mostly for lower floors or where the door isn't located at odd directions (of which balcony or living room direction would be better).

3. Taking the balcony/living room direction standing at the balcony. This assesment is good in general for most apartment especially on higher floor where the Qi flow will be unblocked from the balcony direction.

4. Taking the facing direction from the main entrance of the building. This assessment is for assessing the feng shui luck for the entire building.

5. Taking the facing direction from the entrance of a plot of land. This assessment is for assessing the feng shui luck for the entire plot of land that the entire development is built on.

So you see, there can be different facings depending on what is needed to be assess. There can be micro assessment only within the room within an apartment, apartment within a building. Macro assessment is for like the block of building within a development, plot of land within an area, or North sector of a country, or a country withinthe world.

Often, the most important luck from a home comes more from the External shapes and form. How good or bad a feng shui of the house depends a lot from the external surrounding.So that is often the most important. When assessing the flying star of a home itself, it is just to balance up the sector especially the inauspicious sector, and attempting to activate the wealth luck to boost up your luck.

Thank you so much for your reply. I live on the 3rd floor, so can apply your formula and start doing Flying Star.

The book said to use the trigram formula to apply flying star feng shui.

Is it safe to simply just stand inside the house, looking out, to apply both methods, then? If so, I will throw those books away!

The best luck, so far, was when I applied the compass method and eliminated activating my not so good directions. Thank goodness for your site, and for you. You should take note that a Chinese Compass (Luo Pan) is South to North orientation, whereas a normal compass is North to South. So if you are using a Luo Pan because it is 180 degrees opposite, then the instructions you read in the book is not wrong.As the analysis, will also have to be properly re-orientated to the house in order to be able to give a proper assessment.

As most people can only access to a normal compass, our website has everything orientated North-South just as normal compass. So you will not be wrong by taking the reading by standing ie at your main door looking outwards. This will work for all the reports on our website.

Thank you, Master Lee, for your reply. I will let you know how it goes. Am getting ready to place new staircase, and needed to know info. I have not used the Luo Pan before, just an ordinary compass (am a skilled forester so can use a compass easily) I was confused because the book had a person standing inside the house facing out the main door holding the compass, then a few page later showed the person standing in front of the house, facing the front door, holding the compass toward the front door! So you can see my confusion.

I use your website very much, and also really enjoyed the auspicious day reading. I would like to eventually take classes from your site and gain a certification.
