Dear Fran, 1. For a home, often, if things are not too good, there is a good chance that the Shapes and Forms of the home (either external and interior may have problems). Often, some of the external issues include: wrong placement of water positions etc... 2. Under Compass School of Feng Shui, if one had already stayed in a home; often, what we (practitioners) do is to draw several Flying Star charts to look at the home to see if it `matches' the problems that has been faced inside a home. 3. Thus instead of trying to figure whether the home belongs to period `X' or `Y'; the most practical approach is to try to do a chart of the current period, first e.g. Period 7, since you had mentioned that there were some renovations done during this period. 4. Dear Gek Soo, There are two ways of looking at fire positions: 1. The stove can be considered as a fire protection. Not so much of activating it but rather to see, if it is at a favourable location. 2. Under Flying Star Feng Shui, often, the star numbers at a specific location has to be looked at. And, if there are imbalance in a sector, we can in this way `activate' a "fire element". For example: Period 7 South-East 2 (135 degrees house) East sector has:- mountain star #6 water star #4 base star = 5 Here, Metal 6 destorys wood, wood element is destroyed or weakened by metal. Wood star 4 is inauspicious. However, meal is not sufficient. Here, a FS practitioner may recomend using Fire element to this sector. Thus adding a link of Fire to: Wood (4) -> Add Fire -> Earth (5) and -> Metal (6) This flow will be acceptable under the productive sequence of the five elements. Under this same SE chart: South sector has: mountain #3 water #1 base star #2 Under this sector: Wood helps to exhaust water, wter element is weaken by wood, which inturn makes wood stronger. And there is no elements to control or neutralise it. Hence, Fire element can be added to neutralise it and at the same time provide a positive productive flow: Water -> Wood -> add Fire -> Earth Alternatively, one can still use an alternative: Metal in all the above two examples. For those who are new here, please don't ask me questions like what are mountain, water stars etc... Please do SEARCH for informatin on Flying Star Feng Shui. The other area where `fire' element is activated is based on one's Ba Zi elements. Dear Sonali, 1. The most important consideration for a home is, first and foremost the external environment, the site and the building or home. 2. Within the four walls; as you had mentioned; placement of beds are often restricted by the size of the bedroom, the location of the bedroom door, the windows and any attached bathrooms. 2.1 Therefore, given such a situation; preferably - the bed-head should be placed against a solid wall. 2.2 Under the Eight House, if the one's head cannot face a good direction or especially if the bedroom is unfavourable to a spouse; let the spouse with the better `intangible' force sleep closer to the side closest to this `intangible' force. Whle the partner sleeps further away i.e. on the opposite side. 3. Besides the Shapes and Forms, one can still apply the Flying Star Feng Shui - to check for imbalances (if any) in the bedroom. Often, if one's house was built or had a major renovation done under this current period: Period 7 (1984 to 2003); then; most likely bedrooms location at East and South do (depending) on the chart; have "sickness or misfortune/sickness" stars. Dear Susan, 1. Some geomancers or users simply consider only the Year of birth. While others consider both Year and Month of birth. 2. While others look at Year, Month, Day and Time of birth. Here (geomancy.net); the House of Life and House of Conception are also considered. 3. One of the rationale is besides other considerations; the more variables i.e. stems and branches, the more we can analyse any double or triple combination clashes. These clashes sometimes are unfavourable: while other clashes are favourable. 4. House of Life or how `hard' is one's life or if one was born with a silver spoon is another consideration that can sway one's element e.g. weak water to strong water etc... 5. Thus under Ba Zi, one must understand that even if one's birth element or (assuming) that it is water: but is it `weak' or `strong'. It is not correct to consider the Year of birth being one's element. But rather, the day of birth element. 6. Is the water: Strong or weak? Dear Victor, 1. For the layout plan, often, the emphasis is to try to find the `center-of-gravity' of a home. 2. There is really no hard and fast rule as to whether a balcony can or should be excluded. Often, a more important issue is the garage: as this often occupies a larger area and if we take the entire garage into consideration, it may distort the center-of-gravity of a home. 3. For a balcony, it has to be looked into in relation to the entire layout plan. 4. For example, some balcony protrudes on a landed property. If so, often, we should not take this into account. 5. If the balcony is within the fringe of the entire layout plan (or top-view) and it does not seem to protude-out of the house, then we may consider it as within the home. 6. As mentioned, it depends. And, it is very difficult to give a one-off answer. Feel free to post a layout plan so that I can make comments on where the center-point is. 7. In the past, it is common to see the frontage of a wedding card with the circular Phoenix and Dragon motif on pink coloured paper. 3. Dear Vun Fook, Earlier, on my reply on the white-tiger location, yes, besides the compass direction of West, SW etc...: another major consideration is the Flying Star chart of that specific location. I have just scanned thru your message, but did not fully understand it. But for the star chart of 5ms 2 ws and 7, yes, with such a combination, a third element water is useful here. Under the Five elements concept: Earth -> Metal -> Water Since #5 and #2 are bad earth; Metal can help to draw out some of these earth. But not enough. In fact, this location should have `more metal' to help to further balance #5 and #2. A double edged sword is #7 weak earth. During this current period 7, #7 is still favourable. After 2004, this #7 is not as favourable. Thus especially next year, water is favourable to help reduce #7. Overall, this three cycle flow is considered auspicious or ok. Warmest Regards, Cecil

Futher more, since star #3 is considered as a bad wood element (disputes...); under the five elements concept, you are inadvertently adding more water to wood and further fueling bad wood. (And the main entrance/road) Often the worry about a water position is if (top-down) view, it seems to slice inwards or towards the home. (Much like a knife - cutting into the home). Dear Anon, Frankly, I do not use this sort of thing. This is because; often practitioners don't purposely recommend these situations - more of a safety (harzard) factor. We do not want to be liable - if by any chance, it catches fire. So, often, it is `supervised' properly; then it is acceptable. Frankly, I don't see an issue with water used here. I believe, it is more of a practical reason. Since the wax often falls into the water and makes it easier to maintain. It is not like the water `poured' onto the fire to extinguish it. Dear Spencer, 1. If one is in Singapore, the government has already provided each vehicle with a Ba Gua symbol. 2. So no need for an extra `protective' symbol:) 3. Just look carefully at the Road Tax disc and it is in a protective "Ba Gua" shape. 4. However, it does not seem to help with all the `crazy' irresponsible drivers around (negligent) drivers. 5. For the Chinese, the peacock feature is also a symbol of "driving evil away". But, here, the `devil' lay with us, the bad driver than any other protection. 6. If we stare carefully at a peacock feather, it looks like a large eye staring back at us. Maybe this is one reason why it is used. 7. In Singapore, some Chinese hang a `charm' or scroll below the rear view mirror etc.. 8. Yes, people do hang crystals. 9. We should take these as decorative items. And most of all, we should classify these as under "Human or man" luck i.e. make some people feel good. 10. For most of us, the preferred choice is to rely on being a defensive driver and PRAY hard that our cars have front, side air bags etc... And even if we pray hard, we should pray doubly hard that they MUST work - as a last resort. 11. This will be of interest to car drivers in `hot' countries: "Do you know that it is better to pump patrol in the early morning as the petrol in the storage tanks of petrol stations are colder. If one pumps petrol later, the volume will increase 5 or more percentage points and less petrol will get into our cars." - This is true! 12. The morale of the story: " Check the NSCAP crash value of the car before making a purchase. Good cars have 4 to 5 star ratings." But even with these ratings, please don't test out the car with a lamp post or a tree. It may just split the car! Even if one does so, try not do so with a full petrol tank! The car may catch fire! Dear Anon, A swimming pool at the back is still sustainable for a home. I will be commenting just on Shapes and Forms Feng Shui. 1. Where possible, if it a boomerang shape, the boomerang, does not symbolically `cut' or slice into your home. Where possible, just imagine one holding a side of a boomerang and throwing it out. The boomerang shape or the `external' edge should radiate outwards. 2. If this is the Southeast of a home, it is still acceptable to have a swimming pool. Avoid having the swimming pool located at the west or south-west of the home. 3. Regarding the BBQ pit, where possible, it should be at a corner furthest away from the home. Dear Sheila, OIC, a mobile home. This is quite different from a `landed property'. For a landed property, the most important consideration are: 1. The protection of the `main gate' and the protection of the actual home. More importantly, the need to `shield' the main door e.g. main door located much further inside the premises and is not in a straight line with the sha qi (if any) from a cul de sac. At the same time, the sides or frontage of the home should be away. 2. For a mobile home, frankly, this is something new. And in addition, it is comparatively small as oppose to a landed property. The best option is to park it in a `T' shape with the cul de sac i.e. the side that has the smalles frontage (often, the head of the caravan) pointing towards the cul de sac. Warmest Regards, Cecil

Dear Jen, Please don't get too unduly worried about this. There are so many theories in Feng Shui. One reference point has to do with these: 1. Spirits - are (were) said to travel in a straight line. The thought is (was) that they cannot negotiate turnings. This is the rationale why, many bridges have curves or even some Feng Shui practitioners ask their clients to tilt their door at the NE. 2. Clue: The idea came about because: NE is suppose to be the location where spirits or ghosts come into our world i.e. the devil's gate. And it would be so convenient; (to enter our homes) if our main door happens to be the first door they see. BTW, they are said to be able to go thru doors. So, if one is thinking of getting a door similar to a Bank's vault door (even Class A) rated door won't halt their advance. This is why doors are tilted. Dear Spencer, In my previous postings, I mentioned that I am a `free-thinker'. And so far (touch wood), all my Luo Pan worked well without any blessings. Even if we want it blessed; firstly it is difficult to find someone other than monks from a Chinese temple. I have not encountered this before; but if gender is to be taken into consideration; does it mean that a Male FS practitioner goes to get it blessed by a monk. While a Female FS practitioner goes to a priestess to get it blessed? What happens if the practitioner is overseas with other religion, who does he /she get it blessed from. Clue: Feng Shui is not a religion. And, in my opinion, a luo pan, with its engravings, should often work with or without a blessing. On the money making side: Perhaps, hmm.. it seems so easy to make this type of money;) Anyone, wants your Luo Pan blessed by a free thinker like me? Dear Matilde, Attached please find a common "new home blessing ceremony". But it is based on several Chinese customs. And, please note that quite alot of items mentioned are specific to the Chinese community. However, symbolism plays an important part in our (Chinese) culture. The most simpliest forms of `blessings' has to do with showering "wealth" into our homes. For example, simple situations could include: 1. For the Chinese sprinkle (raw) rice all around the home. Here, it is like showering wealth into the home. 2. Some Chinese sprinkle (raw) green beans also. This also symbolise sowing seeds into the home e.g. having children. Where the green beans: green symbolise east or growth and seeds symbolise growth. 3. Tea leaves. Some Chinese also sprinkle tea leaves into the home. 4. If you look into the .doc file attachment, one can find other items like `pineapple'. 5. For hokkiens (Chinese dialect group); Pineapple in hokkien sounds like " Prosperity ". And throwing (rolling) in a pineapple into the home symbolises prosperity. 6. If one is a Catholic, we often invite a priest to sprinkle holy water. 7. For Christians, feel free to invite your pastor over. As I mentioned above, some of the items found in the .doc file may sound foreign or cannot be obtained in your area - unless you live close-by to a Chinese community or Chinatown. ARE YOU PAYING MORE THAN WHAT YOU SHOULD FOR THAT PROPERTY? IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO BUY? Another good tool to guage property prices is by looking at the Property Price Index. For example, if one had purchased a private property between 1998 and 1999; this was one of the best times to do so. As the private property price is lowest for quite sometime close to the 100 percent mark. If one looks at the graph, 2001 and 2002 seems quite good since for 4th quarter 02, it went to one of the lowest at 115.1 percent. In my opinion, perhaps if more and more condos are built, we could find the private property prices fall to as low as the 60 percentile mark as in 1983/1984 or lower! Therefore, this is perhaps another motivation for all of us to: Choose our units wisely! Morale of the story is: "Choosing a home is not just about the Art of buying a home but also a Science of doing so".
